The Cooper-Harper rating of aircraft handling qualities has been adopted as a standard for measuring the performance of aircraft. In the present work, the tail plane design for satisfying longitudinal handling qualities has been investigated with different tail design for two flight conditions based on the Shomber and Gertsen method. Tail plane design is considered as the tail/wing area ratio. Parameters most affecting on the aircraft stability derivative is the tail/wing area ratio. The longitudinal handling qualities criteria were introduced in the mathematical contributions of stability derivative. This design technique has been applied to the Paris Jet; MS 760 Morane-Sualnier aircraft. The results show that when the tail/wing area ratio increases the aircraft stability derivative increases, the damping ratio and the natural frequency increases and the aircraft stability is improved. Three regions of flight conditions had been presented which are satisfactory, acceptable and unacceptable. This study aims to examine the relationship between the corrosion rate of longitudinal tensile steel bars and the maximum flexural strength of reinforced concrete RC beams. The study's methodology is designed to show the structural behavior of corroded and non-corroded RC beams, such as ultimate load, deflection, stiffness, crack patterns, and failure mode. Three rectangular beams were cast with dimensions (150× 200 ×1200) mm, and all specimens have the same amount of longitudinal and transverse reinforcement and the same concrete strength. The major parameter is the theoretical mass loss level due to corrosion (0, 10, 15) %. Electrochemical technique was used to accelerate the corrosion in the longitudinal tensile bars. All RC beams were tested under four-point monotonic loading. The test results confirm that the cracking load in corroded beams decreased by 25% comparative to the non- corroded beam. The increase of the percent of corrosion experimental mass loss by 8.25 and 14.15 % decreased the ultimate load by about 14 % and 27%, respectively. This reduction coincided with the decrease in deflection values in mid-span for the ultimate load, which decreased by 53.9% and 46.3%. However, the flexural stiffness was reduced by 13.4 and 15.6% for corroded beams with mass loss (8.25 and 14.15), respectively, compared to the control beam (non-corroded RC beam).
Experiments were carried out on natural convection heat transfer from longitudinal trapezoidal fins array heat sink subjected to the influence of orientation. A trapezoidal fins heat sink with various orientations tested under a controlled environment. Test results indicate that the sideward horizontal fin orientation yield the lowest heat transfer coefficient. However the sideward vertical fin orientation gave the best performance on the natural cooling. From the experiments Nu is determined as a function of Ra at Pr=0.7 for each orientation with Ra ranging between (1400 and 3900).From the results; Heat transfer coefficient of the sideward vertical fins is higher by (12%) than the heat transfer coefficient of the upward while it is higher than the heat transfer coefficient of the downward by (26%) and by (120%) with the sideward horizontal fins. Orientation affected the temperature distribution along the fins, therefore the temperature along the sideward vertical fins have the best performance with uniform distribution, while in sideward and downward the temperature increased in the positions near the base plate surface because of the complication in moving the heated air.
This paper offers the linear analysis of the static behavior of two directional functionally graded(2D-FG) cylindrical panels under the effect of internal symmetric loads. The mechanicalproperties of the cylindrical panel are given to be changed simultaneously through the thicknessand longitudinal directions as a function to the volume fraction of the constituents by a simplepower-law distribution. Based on Sander’s first order shear deformation shell theory (FSDT), theequations of motion for (2D-FG) panels are derived using the principle of minimum totalpotential energy (MPE). The finite element method (FEM) as an effective numerical tool isutilized to solve the equations of motion. The model has been compared with those available inthe literature and it observed good correspondence. The influences of the material variationalong the thickness and longitudinal directions, geometrical parameters, boundary conditionsand load parameters on the panel deformation are studied in detail.
The main objective of this study is to determine the effect of vortex generators on a friction factor for fully developed flow of a fluid such as air. Longitudinal vortices can be generated in a channel flow by punching or mounting protrusions in the channel wall. Such vortex generators (VGs) can be classified into delta wing, rectangular wing, pair of delta-winglet and pair of rectangular winglet. These longitudinal vortices disrupt the growth of the boundary layer and lead to enhance the heat transfer rate between the working fluid and the conductor channel wall, but this enhancement is associated with increasing in a pressure gradient along the axial length of the channel. So, the friction factor for fully developed air flow in an equilateral triangular duct is investigated experimentally with Reynolds number ranging from (31,000) to (53,000) and the size of the generators was kept constant for three cases which are single, double, and triple pairs of delta–winglet type of vortex generators embedded in the turbulent boundary layer for attack angle of generator of (30, 40, and 50 ) degree. The results show that the friction factor increases by about (43.5 %) when the angle of attack is varied from (30 deg) to (50 deg) for the triple pairs case compared with the base case (without VG).
In The present work, a thermal analysis of two different chimneys by studying the effect of the flue gases on the chimney shell structure was presented. A computer program was constructing using Fortran language to estimate the thermal stresses that: radial, circumferential and longitudinal thermal stresses which will induced as a result of thermal gradient across the chimney wall structure. The results show, the radial thermal stresses has the minimum value at the middle of the concrete layer in the unlined chimney. The circumferential and longitudinal thermal stresses are transferred from the negative value to the positive value. The maximum value of stresses is found in the inner surface negative value and on the outer surface positive value of the chimney.
The present work represents a two-dimensional numerical investigation of forced laminar flow heat transfer over a 3-rows oval-tube bank in staggered arrangement with rectangular longitudinal vortex generators (LVGs) placed behind each tube. The effects of Reynolds number (from 250 to 1500), the positions (3 in x-axis and 2 in y-axis) and angles of attack (30o and 45o) of rectangular VGs are examined. The study focuses on the Influence of the different parameters of VGs on heat transfer and fluid flow characteristics of three rows oval-tube banks. The characteristics of average Nu number and skin friction coefficient are studied numerically by the aid of the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) commercial code of FLUENT 6.3. The results showed increasing in the heat transfer and skin friction coefficient with the increasing of Re number and decreasing the relative distance of positions of LVGs. It has been observed that the overall Nuav number of three oval-tubes increases by 10–20.4% and by 10.4–27.7% with angles of 30o and 45o respectively, with increasing in the overall average of skin friction coefficient of three oval-tubes reached to 53% and 72% with two angles used respectively, in comparison with the case without VGs.
This paper presents a nonlinear finite element analysis of reinforced concrete beams subjected to pure torsion. A verification procedure was performed on three specimens by finite element analysis using ANSYS software. The verification with the experimental work revealed a good agreement through the torque-rotation relationship, ultimate torque, rotation, and crack pattern. The studied parameters of strengthening by CFRP sheets included strengthening configurations and number of CFRP layers. The confinement configuration methods included full wrapping sheet around the beam, U-shaped sheet, ring strips spaced at either 65 or 130 mm, longitudinal strips at the top and bottom faces, U-shaped strips in addition to the number of layers variable. It was found that the performance of the beam for resisting a torsional force was improved by (33-49%) depending on the method of coating with CFRP sheets and the number of used layers. A change in the angle of twist, as well as the shape of the spread of cracks, was also noticed from the predicted results.
Ramadi city is suffering from severe flood problems during rainfall season as in many cities in developed countries. Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) was used to simulate storm sew-er network in the study area and depending on design rainfall intensity of 9.6 mm/hour. The rainfall intensity was proposed to increased by two to three times of the design intensity because of the absence of metrological stations in the study area to record rainfall intensity data of the rain storm. The intensity increasing by three times led to maximizing the flood risk by 43%. The proposed management to overcoming this problem is linking the collateral lines in Al-Andalus and Alhoz suburbs by additional pipes, this method reduces the percentage of flooding to 31%. Moreover, Economic Indicators (EI) were suggested to evaluate the cost of the network develop-ment. The area index ( ) which represents the total cost of the added pipes to the total area of the suburb, and the longitudinal index ( ), which represents the total cost of the added pipes to the length of the main pipe, the magnitudes of these indexes are 178 US dollar/hectare, and 57 US dollar/m respectively.
